Often called the "king of leather," cordovan is traditionally crafted from the dense shell layer of a working horse's rump—renowned for its exceptional smoothness, depth of color, and lasting strength.
Our cordovan is made in Japan using the most traditional production methods. First, it's tanned with 100% vegetable tannins over the course of about a month—a labor-intensive process that enhances both durability and character. Each hide is carefully shaved from both sides to expose the ultra-compact fiber layer, then slowly dyed with pure aniline dye, allowing the leather's natural texture and nuance to shine through.
After dyeing, the surface is hand-glazed with an agate stone and finished with wax and heat-ironing. With no synthetic topcoat, the result is a calm, transparent luster that matures into a deep, jewel-like sheen over time. Subtle natural markings—pinholes, faint vein marks, or slight color variations—are hallmarks of authentic, quality cordovan. Firm yet supple, the leather softens beautifully with use, developing richer tone and elegant shine.
Care Notes:
- Avoid water contact and excessive friction, as color transfer may occur
- For daily care, gently wipe with a soft, dry cloth
- Conditioning is typically unnecessary during the first year; afterward, apply solvent-free leather cream sparingly as needed
- Store in a cool, well-ventilated area away from sealed containers and sudden temperature changes
