Celebrating Family and Heritage

The Kanchan family in Tokyo, Japan

For Adhikari, Asami, and little Asa Kanchan, the holidays are all about deepening their connection to family and culture. Based in Tokyo’s lively Nakameguro, the Kanchans juggle multiple businesses—Adhikari runs ADI, a modern Nepalese restaurant, while he and Asami also manage Chiyaba, a cozy cafe offering beautiful high-quality tea blends sourced from small farmers in the Himalayan highlands.

As a Japanese-Nepali Hindu family, the Kanchans celebrate Dashain and Tihar in October and November. It’s an almost month-long holiday period that is all about reuniting, cooking, and sharing meals with loved ones. Adhikari fondly talks about whipping up traditional treats like sel roti (a spiced, deep-fried rice batter) and sending out family invitations to prepare for the celebrations—joyful, cozy rituals he now shares with his young family.

On the tenth and last day of Dashain, younger relatives receive tika from their elders—a mixture of rice, yogurt, and vermilion that is placed on the forehead as a blessing. During Tihar, which comes later in the season, homes glow with colorful lights and intricate rangoli patterns to welcome the gods and goddesses; it's a truly vibrant time full of laughter, joy, and a deep appreciation of life.

As business owners in bustling Tokyo, visiting family in Nepal is a rare but precious opportunity for the Kanchans to celebrate life and nurture their connection to ancient traditions. Since Asa was born on a special day during Dashain, the festivities hold an even deeper meaning for the family. Whether they’re in Nepal or Japan, the holidays are a time to honor their roots, enjoy Nepali food and tea, and celebrate their growing family.

Thank you Adhikari, Asami, and Asa for sharing your holiday
