After her Instagram live sessions gained popularity during the COVID-19 lockdown, Hisae Takahashi has been working as an independent PR specialist for various brands. "Denim and leather have a lot in common," says Hisae, styling the Arc Carry Tote and Small Backpack from the Clarte collection with her favorite jeans——pieces that develop rich character over time.
Details Go a Long Way
I worked for a denim maker for a long time; even though I've since become independent, denim is still central to my wardrobe. Because denim is inherently casual, I usually pair it with something elegant, like a buttoned shirt or structured leather bag. I've also come to appreciate how far a touch of refinement can go—like steaming the sweatshirts and T-shirts I pair it with, or adding shine to my hair with a little oil.
Speaking of details, something I like about this Clarte Arc Carry Tote is its beautiful bright hardware. Hardware is often a deciding factor in the overall impression of an outfit, so I'm always conscious of that when building an outfit.
Another thing I appreciate is its spaciousness, because I like work bags that can fit a change of shoes. I tend to wear sneakers on the move, and change into heels for more formal settings. The Arc Carry Tote can easily fit a pair of sneakers, which is great.
Whats in Your Bag? [Work Day Edition]
My work pouch, where I keep a business card case, mobile battery, and charger. My laptop in its case—I used to exclusively choose plain or monotone accessories, but these days I gravitate toward colors and patterns.
I prefer to write on paper, so notebooks and notepads are a must. I love RHODIA notepads; I have no idea how many I've gone through over the years.
The Versatile Mini Leather Backpack
On days I plan to walk around, I'll often choose a backpack—it's easier to carry your essentials, and the mobility is nice. I often get inspiration from looking at street styles on social media; mini backpacks are something I've been eyeing lately, and the Clarte Small Backpack is exactly what I was looking for.
I was also surprised by how comfortably it is on your back! I feel that’s something unique to Tsuchiya Kaban, being a longtime maker of Randoseru bags.
Just like the Arc Carry Tote , the zipper on the Clarte Small Backpack brings an elegant silver accent. A stylist I know once told me, "If the bag isn't right, the whole look won't come together," which has stuck with me.
This is my first leather backpack, but it completely elevates the otherwise more casual backpack and jeans pairing. It boosts my confidence.
What's in Your Bag? [Day Off Edition]
A mini pouch with only the essential makeup items. This year, I started carrying a brighter wallet. Ramune candy as a little emergency snack. My smartphone with an amulet, and a small reusable shopping bag. I keep my accessories in a small case so I don't lose them.
The Luxury of Long-Term Use
Most things look their best when they're new, but denim and leather are among the few fashion items that get better. Holes and fading look great on denim, and leather items develop more character with use. They also lend themselves well to repairs and reuse.
I've recently become more drawn to understated pieces that reflect my personality and lifestyle; bags and clothes I can trust, that will grow with me over the years—rather than the momentary excitement of items with recognizable branding.
As a senior colleague once said to me, "With age comes maintenance—but that’s part of what adds value." I think it’s fulfilling to have things that deepen in character and value with time—and to enjoy that journey myself, alongside them.
Thank you Hisae-san, for sharing your style and philosophy!
