A unique brown leather handbag, shaped like a rounded bucket or a small watermelon, sits on a white surface against a dark gray background. A portion of a green, striped object, resembling the skin of a watermelon, is visible peeking out from the top of the bag. The handbag has a single, sturdy handle.

THE FUN OF CARRYING

「運ぶを楽しむ」
A person wearing glasses and a dark shirt is intently working on a brown leather item, possibly a bag or case, with both hands. They are seated in front of a white industrial sewing machine with a spool of brown thread visible to the left. The background is a plain, dark gray.
In the mind of every conscientious leather bag craftsman is an imaginary drawer filled with imaginative ideas for bags that can be used to carry different things.By honing their skills and drawing from the knowledge they learn day in and day out, our craftsmen can realize design ideas in their minds. Through this series of articles, we will present to you some of the uniquely playful designs created by the craftsmen of Tsuchiya Kaban.

WATERMELON TOTE

If one could freely and easily carry a heavy,
round watermelon in a bag...

This is the thought that went through the mind of our craftsman,
Mr. Kadoi, and inspired him to begin
working on a special leather bag designed to hold a watermelon.

A medium-sized, round brown leather handbag with a single handle is shown against a plain dark gray background. A whole watermelon, with its characteristic green and dark green stripes, is placed inside the bag, with its top half visible. The bag appears to be custom-made to fit the watermelon's shape.
A close-up shot of a unique, round brown leather bag, which appears to be designed to hold a watermelon. The textured leather shows visible stitching forming panels, and a glimpse of the green, striped watermelon skin is visible peeking out from the top left. The bag rests on a dark gray surface, with soft lighting creating subtle shadows.
A top-down view shows a whole watermelon on the left, with its characteristic green and dark green stripes radiating from the center. To the right, a brown leather bag with an open top and a handle is visible. The bag appears to be designed to carry the watermelon, and its interior lining is also brown. Both items are placed on a plain dark gray surface.

CRAFTMANSHIP

REINFORCED BASE DESIGN

Crafted using a technique similar to that employed for the Diario series, the base of this bag was created by sewing together multiple overlapping pieces of leather. If the bag was twisted or pulled during this process, the leather might become contorted or deformed. This is why the craftsman needed to carefully control the amount of force applied when crafting the bag while imagining the appearance of the finished product.

THE CRAFTSMAN WHO CREATED THIS BAG

Kadoi Yusuke

At the age of 28, Mr. Kadoi quit his job as a chef in favor of a new career path as a leather bag craftsman. He is currently the leader of a team of craftsmen responsible for crafting leather bags for adults at our Nishiarai Atelier in Japan.
