Leather Care Lesson 2
How to Effectively Waterproof Your Leather Piece
Contact with water can lead to staining, water spots, or discoloration on your leather item. Waterproofing helps prevent this damage and also keeps your piece cleaner by reducing how much dirt settles into the surface. If you plan to use your item frequently—especially outdoors or in unpredictable weather—we recommend waterproofing it before its first use.
These simple steps will help protect your leather so you can enjoy it with confidence for years to come.
What You'll Need
・Leather-specific waterproof spray
・A clean cotton cloth (for dry wiping)
※ Note on the choice of cloth: to avoid scratching or zippers catching onto the fabric, we recommend using a cloth made from natural materials such as cotton. Do not use pile fabrics.
When is a Good Time to Waterproof Your Piece?
The timing of waterproofing depends on how you plan to use your piece. If you want your leather to develop a rich patina but are concerned that waterproofing might slow that process, consider applying it only when water exposure is likely. For example, if a stretch of rainy weather is in the forecast, you can waterproof your item the day before.
Waterproofing in 3 Steps
1. Clean the leather surface
Use a clean, soft cloth to dry wipe your piece. Carefully wipe clean the surface, paying extra attention to the seams where dirt and dust are likely to accumulate.
2. Apply the spray outdoors
Apply the spray outdoors, holding the nozzle about 12 inches (30 cm) from the leather. Mist the surface evenly. The leather will look slightly wet and may deepen in color at first; allow it to dry for 30 minutes, after which it will return to its original tone.
If this is your first time using a waterproofing spray, test it on a less visible area—such as the bottom or a corner—before treating the entire piece to ensure there’s no unwanted discoloration.
【A Note on Timing and Frequency】
For best results, allow enough time to complete the entire waterproofing process, including a full 30-minute drying period. Avoid applying waterproofing right before heading out. The longevity of the waterproofing effect varies by product, so be sure to check the manufacturer’s instructions and reapply regularly to maintain protection.
3. Drying
After applying the spray, let the leather dry for 30 minutes to ensure that the waterproof spray penetrates the leather. Once the surface is completely dry, wipe it with a soft, clean cotton cloth. You can then dribble one or two drops of water onto a less visible area (such as the bottom of your piece) to test effectivity. If droplets form, then your item is successfully waterproofed.
The longevity of the waterproofing effect varies by product. Tsuchiya Kaban’s preferred spray is "Collonil Waterstop Classic," which is effective for about one week. Please familiarize yourself with your product of choice so you can waterproof your pieces effectively. In the event that your bag still absorbs water even after waterproofing, please wipe it dry as quickly as possible with a soft cloth or handkerchief.
