Celebrating Milestone Moments

Our starting point as a brand was the randoseru: an iconic example of a bag that commemorates a significant milestone for children in Japan. Over our 70 years crafting quality bags, it has inspired us to create designs to mark the milestones in our lives as adults as well.

We pondered how we might go about creating such a bag; what material would we use? What shape and functions would we give it? We wanted to craft something that was both exquisite enough to commemorate a special occasion, yet also elegant and subtle enough to accompany everyday life. The Legacy Logo line embodies this delicate balance in the way it highlights the natural beauty of leather—particularly its expressive, sculptural qualities.

On a mission to highlight the rich nuances of leather, we experimented with various techniques and surface treatments. We finetuned the embossed pattern over many iterations to create a captivating texture.

Creating a repeat pattern with our logo was also a way for us to pay homage to Japanese aesthetics—in particular, the tradition of adorning everyday moments with symbolic, geometric patterns. We hope this novel leather can symbolize our precious journeys as we grow and deepen our lives with each day, month, and year.

Finetuning Each Step

The process of creating this three-dimensional "T" pattern was not without its fair share of challenges. We soon learned that giving the logo more height did not result in a clearer pattern as we had hoped. The only way to find the best iteration was to continue to experiment with painstaking attention to detail, altering the logo height by a mere 0.1mm at a time.

The next challenge was finding a way to maintain both the subtle, natural characteristics of the leather itself, while ensuring that the logo would maintain its clarity over time. It took further trial and error to select an appropriately pliable yet durable material for the backing, and arrive at the precise embossing pressure and temperature.
