“I fell in love with its striking shape and quiet elegance.”
—Makiko Miyama, Tsuchiya Kaban Japan
Welcome to our Staff Favorites series, where Tsuchiya Kaban team members share their real-life favorites, and what they love about them. Today, Japan team member Makiko talks about her everyday companion: the Black Nume Oval Shoulder.
—What made you choose this bag?
This bag immediately caught my eye at the Shibuya store, even before I joined Tsuchiya. Its oval silhouette and quiet presence stood out. From the front, the hardware is hidden—making the shape even more striking. It was love at first sight.
After years of carrying a laptop, I realized I’d been choosing only practical bags. I was ready for something joyful, that I’d be excited to wear—and this bag struck that chord.
It also felt like a natural fit for my wardrobe. I usually go for relaxed, comfortable looks, but recently I’ve wanted something a bit more refined—something I could pair with a jacket or even bring to formal occasions. This bag was just right.
Crafted from vegetable-tanned steerhide, this shoulder bag balances strength and softness. Its gender-neutral design and 5-length adjustable strap make it a versatile, subtly expressive companion for daily life.
—How do you use it?
I use it for both commuting and weekends. I usually wear it crossbody—in front on workdays, slung back on days off. With a jacket style, it adds a feminine touch so the look doesn’t feel too masculine. With a dress, it brings just enough structure to balance the sweetness.
On days off, I often wear jeans and a sweatshirt, or a long skirt with a T-shirt; very casual looks. I love that this bag elevates those outfits too.
I usually carry my phone, wallet, handkerchief, and a few other essentials. It’s compact, but holds more than meets the eye!
—What do you love most about it?
The oval shape first caught my eye, but over time I’ve come to admire the fine details. The edges are rounded and polished so smoothly I sometimes find myself studying them on my commute.
The stitching around the zipper is another favorite—the curved end is so precisely finished, it shows the level of care and craftsmanship that goes into each part.
The matte finish and smooth texture of the Soft Nume Leather is beautiful—there’s a calm, refined quality that reminds me of sumi ink or a monk’s kesa robe. Maybe it’s because of my calligraphy practice, but it feels very Japanese in its elegance.
Though I worried about scratches at first, the dark color hides marks well, and it’s held up beautifully with frequent use.
At first, the leather felt quite firm and formal, but over time it softened beautifully without losing its shape. The opening and strap became more flexible, while the oval silhouette stayed intact.
With regular use and a quick wipe after each outing, the leather has developed a soft sheen—a quiet elegance that’s deepened my love for the bag.
