—What drew you to this bag?

I stumbled across this bag at the Tsuchiya Kaban store in Yokohama and fell in love with it immediately. I had been looking for a tote bag that struck the right balance—not too casual nor too formal—and this was it. I also liked how the navy color gave it a clean, urban look. I held back at the time though, as I was between jobs—and decided to wait.

As I continued to weigh different job opportunities, it suddenly occurred to me that a good way to make a decision would be to take a close look at the products that a company is making, because products are what reflect a company’s values. The moment I thought of this, I remembered this tote bag—which prompted me to look at job openings at Tsuchiya Kaban. I found a position that was perfect for me, and I brought this bag along for the interview. Looking back now, perhaps it was this tote bag that forged the connection between me and Tsuchiya Kaban.

—How do you use it?

I mainly use it for my daily commute. What I love is how it works equally well with casual outfits as well as more polished looks. I like matching my bag with my shoes, and the color and texture of this bag goes well with everything from sneakers to black or brown leather shoes.

The wide opening makes it easy to toss things in, so I pack all sorts of items; thanks to the various pockets, I’m able to keep my keys, wallet, and other essentials neatly organized. I also love the depth, which can comfortably fit a folding umbrella or water bottle.

I try not to carry too much—I don't like when my bag get bulky—but I do like to have room for extras, like a cardigan. This bag makes that easy.

—What’s your favorite thing about it?

It’s simple and minimalist, with no odd quirks—just a clean, sleek silhouette. If you look closely, the details are intricate, but everything is understated and restrained. The visual balance is exquisite.

I also appreciate the delicate balance it strikes. The rounded handles are elegant yet substantial—carefully proportioned to feel masculine without being heavy-handed. Subtle things like that make it so easy to style, even with a casual outfit.

This tote holds so much that it gives you a real sense of ease. It’s all you need for an overnight business trip or getaway. It sits comfortably on your shoulder, making travel that much more effortless.

The two side pockets are incredibly convenient. The zippered pocket is a perfect place for your wallet, and the open pocket for quick-access items, like a commuter pass or smartphone. It hits a great balance between ample storage capacity and thoughtful, user-friendly details.

The feel of the leather has evolved quite a bit since I first bought it. Initially, the leather was firm and kept its shape, but over time it has softened and become more supple. Observing the unique characteristics of this leather makes me feel a much deeper connection to it—it’s one-of-a-kind to me.

It started out with a matte finish, but it has naturally burnished to develop a rich, deep luster. Even without much buffing, it's taken on a wonderful sheen that is a joy to look at. The color hasn't changed so much, but I’m really looking forward to seeing how it continues to age.
