Steerhide (Bengara-dyed)
Bengara-Dyed Leather: Tradition Meets Timeless Elegance
Our Bengara-dyed leather is crafted from carefully selected high-quality raw hides. After wet-blue pre-tanning, the leather is tanned, and dyed with Bengara—a traditional Japanese dyeing technique that uses red iron oxide (iron rust). The leather is then finished through a meticulous process that includes ironing, color adjustment, and a color-fixing treatment.
Bengara refers to the use of red iron oxide, which reacts with the tannins to create a rich, deep red hue. This dyeing method imparts unique expressions that evolve beautifully over time. Unique characteristics such as natural marks and color variations are preserved intentionally to emphasize individuality, allowing each piece to be one-of-a-kind.
Colors show subtle variations due to naturally occurring factors within the dyeing process, such as iron content, water quality, and drying time. Its evolving beauty is particularly captivating, as Bengara leather gradually deepens in color and patina with age, revealing a unique richness.
※Due to the natural finish, unique characteristics of the leather such as natural marks and color variations that occur during the tanning process are more pronounced, and is part of the charm of this distinctive leather. Subtle color variations may occur between connected parts or across different production batches. These variations are intentionally preserved, as they contribute to the unique individuality of each piece.
※Color Transfer & Fading: Due to the dyeing process, some color transfer or fading may occur. Be mindful when handling and storing the leather to prevent staining or discoloration.
※Pull-Up Effect: The leather will show lighter tones when it is pressed or bent, creating what is referred to as a "pull-up" effect that adds to its character.
※Light Sensitivity: To preserve its natural appearance, the leather is treated with minimal color-fixing. Extended exposure to direct sunlight may cause fading. We recommend storing items made from this leather in a shaded environment when not in use.

The Look of Natural Leather
We have chosen to keep natural markings such as scars, wrinkles, veins, and pores on the cowhide to showcase the natural appearance of the leather in our products. This is one of the most distinctive features of our bags. The appearance of the leather will vary depending on the part of the hide and individual differences between animals. Through careful observation, you will uncover your leather product's unique, one-of-a-kind appearance.
