Cordovan

Cordovan

Aniline-Dyed Japanese Cordovan (100% Vegetable-Tanned)

Often called the “king of leather,” cordovan is a leather traditionally made from the dense shell layer of a working horse’s rump—renowned for its exceptional smoothness, depth of color, and lasting strength.
Our cordovan is crafted in Japan, sticking to the most traditional methods of production. It is first tanned with 100% vegetable tannins over the course of about a month; a labor-intensive process that enhances both durability and character. Each hide is carefully shaved from both sides to expose the ultra-compact fiber layer, then dyed slowly with pure aniline dye as opposed to pigment—allowing the leather’s natural texture and nuance to shine through.

After dyeing, the surface is hand-glazed with an agate stone and finished with wax and heat-ironing. With no synthetic topcoat, the result is a calm, transparent luster that matures into a deep, jewel-like sheen over time. Subtle natural markings such as pinholes (follicles), faint veins, or slight color variations are hallmarks of an authentic, minimally finished hide. Firm yet supple, the leather softens beautifully over time, developing a richer tone and elegant shine that tells your story.

Care Notes:
Avoid contact with water and excessive friction, as color transfer may occur. For daily care, gently wipe the surface with a soft, dry cloth. Conditioning is typically unnecessary during the first year; afterward, apply a small amount of solvent-free leather cream as needed. Store in a cool, well-ventilated place, away from sealed containers and sudden temperature changes.

The Look of Natural Leather

We have chosen to keep natural markings such as scars, wrinkles, veins, and pores on the cowhide to showcase the natural appearance of the leather in our products. This is one of the most distinctive features of our bags. The appearance of the leather will vary depending on the part of the hide and individual differences between animals. Through careful observation, you will uncover your leather product's unique, one-of-a-kind appearance.
